Water Flosser: Up to 2X more effective than dental floss for gum health around implants

Objective

This study aims to compare the effectiveness of water flosser and dental floss in improving gingival health around dental implants, particularly in reducing bleeding on probing (Bleeding on Probing, BOP), a key indicator of gingival inflammation and the risk of peri-implantitis.

Methodology

The study conducted by Magnuson et al. evaluated the effects of water flossers and dental floss on the gingival health of implants after a 30-day period of use. Two groups were formed:

  • Water jet group : Patients using a water flosser in addition to brushing
  • Dental floss group : Patients using dental floss in addition to brushing

Changes in gingival health were measured by observing the reduction in bleeding on probing (BOP).

Results: Up to 2.5X greater effectiveness

The results demonstrate that the water flosser is significantly more efficient than flossing to improve gum health around implants:

  • Reduced bleeding on probing (BOP): After 30 days of use, 81.8% of implants of the water flosser group showed a reduction in BOP, compared to only 33.3% in the dental floss group.
  • Relative efficiency: The water flosser has been 2.5 times more efficient than dental floss in reducing signs of gum inflammation around implants.
  • Prevention of peri-implantitis: Reduced bleeding on probing is a key indicator in the prevention of peri-implant disease. The water flosser demonstrates an increased ability to promote the stability and health of peri-implant tissues.

Conclusion

Clinical results confirm that the water flosser is an alternative significantly more efficient than dental floss to improve gum health around dental implants. Its action significantly reduces bleeding, thus contributing to the prevention of peri-implant complications such as mucositis and peri-implantitis. The water flosser is therefore a recommended tool for implant wearers wishing to optimize their oral hygiene and extend the longevity of their implant restorations.
